Kenya Huduma Registration

As a Kenyan, how safe is your Digital Identity?

In this part of the region, its normal to receive a call from a fraudster purporting to be a customer care agent from one of the banks. The determined “agent” will identify you by your name, email, Identify Card number, KRA PIN number and even have your bank account number in extreme instances. This will end by you either being scummed or abused for not following along 🙁

“Begin at the beginning,” the King said, very gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” – Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

This happens today almost one year now since the enactment of the Data Protection Bill in Kenya.

Kenya Data Protection Bill

The Kenya Data Protection Bill was assented to law on the 8th of November, 2019 acknowledging people’s right to informational privacy and outlining restrictions on private data handling and sharing by government and corporations.

The act obligates data controllers and processors to keep the private data anonymous and to exercise privacy by design in their data processing systems. This has however been far from the truth as evidenced from the multiple data breaches that have left Kenyan’s citizens data exposed for anybody to exploit.
